Head coach Julen Lopetegui feels that his side 'came close to perfection' as they recorded a resounding 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Molineux on Saturday afternoon.

Head coach Julen Lopetegui has heaped praise on his Wolverhampton Wanderers side after they recorded a 3-0 victory over Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.

Wolves started the fixture at Molineux in the Premier League relegation zone and having lost their last 11 top-flight fixtures against the Merseyside giants.

However, the West Midlands outfit produced one of their best performances of the season, establishing a 2-0 lead after 12 minutes and going on to collect just their fifth league win of the campaign.

An own goal from Joel Matip and a clinical close-range finish from Craig Dawson put Wolves into the lead before they had to withstand strong pressure from their opponents after the break.

Nevertheless, after coming through that spell, Wolves went on to net a match-clinching third through Ruben Neves, who slotted home after excellent work from Adama Traore.

Wolves now sit in 15th position in the Premier League standings ahead of two mammoth contests against Southampton and Bournemouth.

While attention will soon turn to the first of those games, Lopetegui has acknowledged that his squad deserve to enjoy their success over Jurgen Klopp's struggling side.

Speaking to Match of the Day, the Spaniard said: "Overall about the win, we need wins to achieve our aim and today we played a very good team. I think in the first half we overcame then, scored two goals, sometimes you overcome the opponent but don't score and in the second half they overcame us.

"We suffered a lot in the first 20-25 minutes. We recovered then after we changed some things, we get a very good score for us, a very good win for us.

"Against these kind of teams you have to be very close to perfection if not you don't score and sometimes it's not enough. We try to defend well, be aggressive and match them with the ball.

"It's not easy, it's easier if you score quickly as we did today but in the end they are three points. We haven't done anything yet, we have hard work ahead of us, the injury was a pity with Hwang Hee-Chan but after we will try to be ready for the next match.

"I want to highlight the team in general. They have played in a very good way and we tried to match Liverpool. We suffered when we had to, playing against one of the best teams. We are happy today."

Klopp and goalkeeper Alisson Becker have reacted to Liverpool's defeat, the former admitting that he felt 'lost for words' at the manner of his team's latest setback.
