Preview: Tottenham Hotspur vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Premier League clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Tottenham Hotspur play host to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon looking to extend their unbeaten start to the new Premier League campaign.

While Spurs occupy fourth spot in the standings, Wolves are down in 14th position having failed to defeat either Leeds United or Fulham.

Match preview

Although it may take some time for the dust to finally settle after the heated confrontation between Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, the former will be more concerned about ensuring that Spurs continue to build momentum.

For the large part, the North Londoners were outclassed by their city rivals, but Harry Kane's last-gasp equaliser meant that his side made the short trip back home feeling like they had won.

There was an element of good fortune about their comeback, but Spurs and Conte equally deserve credit for the manner of the revival, even if the Italian's behaviour on the touchline took away some of that praise.

Nevertheless, Spurs now have four points and six goals on the board from two fixtures, keeping them in close proximity to Manchester City who they face on September 10.

Conte will want to remain within touching distance of the defending champions ahead of the trip to the Etihad Stadium, and he will fancy his team's chances of collecting another three points at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium even if he will not be present in the dugout due to last week's red card.

Every Wolves supporter is currently on a high having pulled off one of the signings of the summer in Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes, but they should not lose sight of their team needing to perform on the pitch.

Even though Wolves have played well enough to defeat each of Leeds and Fulham, a return of one point heaps the pressure on Bruno Lage's side ahead of the trip to the capital.

The vision that Wolves have sold to Nunes and Goncalo Guedes involves European football, not a relegation battle, but there is also an expectation that both players hit the ground running over the coming weeks.

Although this game may come too soon for the pair to feature in the starting lineup, their acquisitions are a statement to teammates who have occupied their respective roles with little competition in the past.

Wolves have prevailed in three of their last four away fixtures against Spurs, the most recent occasion coming in February as Raul Jimenez and Leander Dendoncker both got on the scoresheet.

Team News

Cristian Romero in action for Tottenham Hotspur in February 2022© Reuters

With Cristian Romero having sustained a muscle injury, either Clement Lenglet, Davinson Sanchez or Japhet Tanganga will be drafted into the Spurs backline.

Providing that there are no other fitness issues, that is likely to be the solitary change with Richarlison having to make do with a spot on the substitutes' bench.

This fixture will come too soon for Oliver Skipp, who is making progress in his recovery from a hairline fracture of his heel.

Nunes will almost certainly start this contest among the replacements having had just two days to train with his new Wolves teammates.

Guedes may be considered for a start with Morgan Gibbs-White having left for Nottingham Forest, but Nelson Semedo, Joao Moutinho and Adama Traore are likely to be kept in reserve after their recent injuries.

Tottenham Hotspur possible starting lineup:
Lloris; Sanchez, Dier, Davies; Emerson, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Sessegnon; Kulusevski, Kane, Son

Wolverhampton Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Sa; Jonny, Collins, Kilman, Ait-Nouri; Dendoncker, Neves; Guedes, Podence, Neto; Hwang

We say: Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

While Wolves can take confidence from their overall performances over the last two weeks, we cannot ignore that goals remain an issue. That is not a concern that you want heading into a game with Spurs on unfamiliar territory, and we can only back a relatively comfortable win for the home side.
