Preview: St Mirren vs. Ross County - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Scottish Premiership clash between St Mirren and Ross County, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Ross County shall be hoping to extend their unbeaten run to three games on Wednesday when they travel to face St Mirren as the Staggies continue to try and push out of the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, the hosts have failed to win in their previous six performances, which is something that the squad needs to put right.

St Mirren's difficult run continued at the weekend as they were defeated 2-0 by Hearts in a game that saw Joe Shaughnessy sent off in the 95th minute.

The red card only added insult to injury as the loss stretched their run without a win to six matches, with their last victory taking place in the reverse fixture against Ross County.

When they last faced each other it was the Buddies that narrowly came out on top in a closely-contested five-goal thriller, as they edged the result 3-2.

Jim Goodwin's team have failed to find the back of the net in three of their last six matches, which is a cause for concern, but no other squad have conceded more than Ross County.

However, as they only sit three points above the relegation zone, there is pressure on St Mirren in order to secure a positive result on Wednesday.

There is as much importance for the Staggies in midweek though as they are currently three points away from safety, with the squad hoping to put pressure on both Dundee and Livingston with a victory.

Malky Mackay's team have been able to earn positive results in their previous two performances though, showcasing that they are not willing to give up on the season.

Ross County defeated Hibernian in a 1-0 result thanks to a goal from Blair Spittal and they followed that up with a 1-1 draw against Dundee United at the weekend.

It was a tough game for the squad after they fell behind and then went down to 10 men when Harry Clarke was shown a red card, but a 93rd-minute goal from Jack Baldwin saw them earn a point.

With fixtures against teams around them at the bottom of the table coming up, there is an opportunity for the Staggies to build some real momentum moving forwards, which they will be hoping to achieve.

Team News

St Mirren were dealt a blow as Conor McCarthy is now set to miss the entire season due to an ankle injury that will be requiring surgery.

This will stretch the squad as Shaughnessy will also be unavailable on Wednesday following his red card against Hearts at the weekend, meaning a makeshift defence will be required.

Ross County will also be missing a player due to suspension after Clarke was sent for an early shower in the draw with Dundee United, which will lead to a defensive change.

Joseph Hungbo came on and made a major impact in that fixture, playing a key part in the late equaliser and that could see him possibly earn a place in the starting XI on Wednesday.

St Mirren possible starting lineup:
Alnwick; Fraser, Dunne, Millar; Tait, Flynn, Power, Tanser; Ronan, McGrath; Brophy

Ross County possible starting lineup:
Maynard-Brewer; Randall, Lacovitti, Baldwin, Watson; Tillson, Cancola; Hungbo, Paton, Spittal; White

We say: St Mirren 0-1 Ross County

Even though St Mirren sit higher in the league, the recent form of the two teams actually favours Ross County being able to sneak three points on Wednesday.

While it is sure to be a close game between them, the Staggies could be able to get more points on the board in a bid to continue their current run.
