Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos is reportedly set for a contract showdown with the club after reaching an impasse during talks over an extension.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has reportedly reached an impasse in his talks over a contract extension at the club.

The 34-year-old's current deal expires next summer and, as things stand, he would be free to discuss terms with foreign clubs next January.

The Spain stalwart is keen to stay on at the Bernabeu and wants to sign a new two-year contract to take him through to 2023, by which stage he would be 37.

However, the Evening Standard reports that Madrid are only willing to offer him a 12-month extension on top of his current deal due to his advancing years.

Ramos could therefore be involved in another standoff with the club, having also come close to leaving in 2015 and last season.

The centre-back is fifth on the all-time list of Real Madrid appearance-makers, playing 640 games for the 13-time European champions since joining from Sevilla in 2005.
