Terry Butcher leaves post with the Philippines

Former England captain Terry Butcher leaves his position as head coach of the Philippines national team without managing a single match.

Former England captain Terry Butcher has left his position as head coach of the Philippines national team without managing a single match.

Butcher replaced Thomas Dooley as boss of Manila in the middle of June, and had been preparing the nation for their first-ever Asian Cup appearance at the start of 2019.

However, the 59-year-old, who made 77 appearances for England between 1980 and 1990, has now walked away from the role.

"I'm sorry to announce that I will not be proceeding in the role as head coach of the Philippines national football team," Butcher told reporters. "Regretfully, I've not been able to make this work in the way that I intended and I've decided not to continue in the role."

Butcher had previously not managed since being leaving Newport County in 2015.
