Newcastle United new boy Jonjo Shelvey 'didn't suit Swansea City style of play'

Jonjo Shelvey reveals that he left Swansea City to join Newcastle United because he "didn't suit" the Swans' style under Alan Curtis.

Newcastle United's latest midfield signing Jonjo Shelvey has revealed that he left Swansea City because he "didn't suit" their style.

Newcastle sealed a £12m move to sign the England international from their Premier League relegation rivals earlier this week, and Shelvey gave his first press conference as a Magpie today.

He revealed that he did not ask to leave but was getting frustrated by the lack of action he saw in the last couple of months under Alan Curtis, adding that his departure would end up being the Swans' loss.

"It is good to be [at Newcastle] and I am excited," Shelvey told reporters. "I have been welcomed with open arms. It is a passionate city and I will fit in here the way I play.

"I want game time. I was told I didn't suit the style of Swansea's play by the manager. I never once asked to leave.

"I wasn't going to play, wasn't getting my chance and I needed a new challenge. I was lucky a massive club showed interest in me. It is going to be Swansea's loss in the end."

Shelvey could make his debut in tomorrow's home match against West Ham United.
