Tottenham Hotspur have beaten Manchester United in the race to sign West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on a free transfer, according to a report.

The England international is out of contract at The Hawthorns this summer, and after it being confirmed that he will leave the West Midlands side, numerous top flight clubs have been linked with his signature.

Both Spurs and United were linked with a heavy interest in the 29-year-old, but according to the Mirror, it is the former that have won the race.

The report outlines that United have decided not to pursue a move for Johnstone due to the competition already being provided for David de Gea's number one spot by backup option Dean Henderson.

With Spurs recently deciding against a permanent move for on-loan goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini, it has opened up the possibility of the former United and Aston Villa goalkeeper competing with Hugo Lloris to be the first choice at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium for the 2022-23 campaign.

Following West Brom's relegation to the Championship last season, Johnstone remained at The Hawthorns despite interest last summer, but after being unable to help the Baggies return to the Premier League, it was recently confirmed that he would be leaving the club following the expiration of his contract in June.
