Neville calls for Woodward to leave United

Gary Neville has said that Manchester United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward should step down from his role if the club are to move forwards. The Red Devils have struggled since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013 and have had a poor start to this season, winning just two of their opening eight Premier League games.

"I don't believe the guy at the top should be there doing it anymore, I think he has had his chance but that is another story," Neville said on Sky Sports. "The club has gone backwards in some senses in the short-term for what would be I think a better position in the longer term."

Sunderland keen on Stendel?

Former Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel is interested in the managerial vacancy at Sunderland, according to the Northern Echo. The Black Cats parted ways with Jack Ross earlier this week following their poor start to the new League One season. Fan favourite Stendel led Barnsley to promotion from the third tier last season but also lost his job this week after a winless run of 10 games.

Odegaard: 'I'm happy at Real Sociedad'

Real Madrid youngster Martin Odegaard has insisted that he is focusing on his time on loan at Real Sociedad amid reports linking him with a big-money move to Manchester United in the near future.

The 20-year-old told Eurosport Norway: "I'm under contract at Real Madrid. They occasionally write to me - they tell me how they see me getting on Now they congratulate me for the good start I've had in La Liga, and they've told me they're very happy with what they've seen.

"Real Sociedad and their coaching staff are the ones who are showing me the way. They are the ones who are teaching me the tactical side of the game and how I can improve. The idea is to respect my contract and the loan agreement with Real Sociedad. I have a loan contract with Real Sociedad and I'm very happy to be part of the team. That's how I'd like it to stay until the loan comes to an end."

Sherwood: 'Pochettino will never be sacked'

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Tim Sherwood has insisted that owner Daniel Levy will never sack Mauricio Pochettino. Spurs are on a dreadful run of form that has seen them embarrassed by Bayern Munich in a 7-2 defeat at their own stadium and most recently suffer a 3-0 defeat at Brighton.

"Daniel Levy is one of the most astute men in football; do you think he in his right mind will sack Mauricio Pochettino?" Sherwood, who managed Spurs in the 2013-14 season, told talkSPORT. "He has got so much credit in the bank with that football club. There is no way he will sack Mauricio Pochettino – not in a million years.

"Now if Mauricio decides he has had enough and he can take the club no further and he wants to move on to pastures new, then I still think he is mad to do that. I think he is the man for the job. I don't want to him leave. I love the guy, I love the football club.

"Everything is great [at Tottenham]. We saw that first NFL game at the stadium and it was fantastic. Everything is going brilliantly for Tottenham but they have to get over this bump in the road. Every club has it."

BBC lands next two World Championships

The BBC has secured the broadcast rights to the 2021 and 2023 editions of the World Athletics Championships following its coverage of this year's competition in Doha, the corporation has announced. BBC Sport director Barbara Slater said: "After the medal-winning performances from Dina Asher-Smith, Katarina Johnson-Thompson and our relay teams, this is fantastic news for the BBC that we can continue to broadcast world-class athletics free-to-air and provide audiences across the country with the best coverage of our British athletes and world superstars."

Wijnaldum plays down Liverpool lead

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has said that it would be "really wrong" for the side to get carried away and think they have the Premier League title in the bag. The Reds have an eight-point lead over current champions Manchester City after the first eight games of the campaign but with 30 games still to play, Wijnaldum is remaining cautious.

"We don't want to think we are already champions. That would be a really wrong thing to do," he told Sky Sports News. "I'm sure the manager will keep us with our feet on the ground and say that we just have to think about ourselves, and try to play good and try to give 100% every week.

"We just have to do what we did before and look at ourselves and not look too much to other teams because we don't have influence on other teams - we can't control the performance of other teams. We just have to make sure we are ready for the games that are to come and to make sure we are ready and try to have good results because we know that it can change quickly. Then at the end of the season we will see where we stand."
