Getafe president Angel Torres says that his club are working towards signing Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood on a permanent basis.

Getafe president Angel Torres has said that his club are working towards signing Mason Greenwood on a permanent basis from Manchester United.

Greenwood moved to Getafe on loan on transfer deadline day after he was told that he would not be brought back into the first-team picture at Old Trafford.

In January 2022, following accusations from a woman, the 22-year-old was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault, and he was then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

Greenwood was also facing charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, but there is no longer a case against him.

Man United are believed to have initially decided to bring their academy product back into the first team for the 2023-24 campaign before changing their mind due to the public backlash.

Greenwood has been in strong form for Getafe, scoring four goals and registering three assists in 13 appearances in all competitions.

Real Sociedad and Valencia are both believed to be keen to sign him on a permanent basis next summer, but there have been suggestions that he could still potentially return to the Man United first team, with his contract at Old Trafford having another 18 months left to run.

Getafe's president has signalled a desire to keep hold of Greenwood, with the La Liga club in discussions with his parent club over the possibility of a deal.

"We have not talked about price. We have talked about looking at the situation and seeing what they propose because there has also been a change of shareholding there at Manchester [United]," he told Cadena SER.

"But we are still happy with the meetings and with the video conferences we have with them. It is still too early to consider either continuing for one more season or that they will propose a price and we will commit the whole [of the contract] because we have a percentage and to buy the rest.

"I believe a lot [in Greenwood]. From here, we continue to work periodically, we continue to meet with Manchester [United] to see if they are happy.

"The truth is that they are happy with the treatment, not only from the fans of Getafe, but also from the whole Spain. Now we have to keep on defending him.

"He didn't play for 16 months and I think that in January, February he will be able to get the rhythm. He will give us satisfaction."

Greenwood has scored 35 goals and registered 12 assists in 129 appearances for Man United in all competitions, and he was viewed as one of the best young players in European football before his arrest.
