Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton says that it's "hard" to see Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand play for the Three Lions again.

Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton has claimed that he won't be surprised if Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand never wears an England shirt again.

The 34-year-old snubbed manager Roy Hodgson's call-up into the squad for the Three Lions' World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro, despite not playing for his country since June 2011.

"It was a farce," Shilton told talkSPORT. "It's not right and it's not the right preparation. Roy Hodgson handled it well though and he didn't go overboard.

"It's hard to see him come back and play for England after all of this. He's not getting any younger He would have been needed against Montenegro, it's a vital match and, with him not being there, you have to wonder whether his future with England is over."

Ferdinand cited a strict training regime as the reason to why he couldn't join up with his national teammates.
