Schmeichel: 'Man United players losing trust in Onana'

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel fears that the Red Devils players are losing trust in stopper Andre Onana.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has said that the Red Devils players are likely to be losing trust in Andre Onana following another mistake from the stopper.

The 27-year-old arrived at Old Trafford from Inter Milan over the summer, being brought to the club as a replacement for David de Gea, who was allowed to leave on a free transfer.

Onana has struggled during the early stages of his career in Manchester, conceding 19 times in 11 matches, and many of his performances have been called into question.

Arguably, the Cameroonian's biggest mistake came against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, when he allowed a tame strike from Leroy Sane to squirm into the back of the net.

Onana was also at fault in Man United's 2-1 win over Brentford on Saturday, with Mathias Jensen's weak effort making the breakthrough in the first period.

The stopper's role in last week's 3-2 loss to Galatasaray in the Champions League has also been criticised, and Schmeichel fears that the squad could now be losing faith in him.

"I think a lot of that [Onana's mistakes] is pressure. I spoke to him after Bayern. I spoke to him after Galatasaray as well and he was very down on the mistakes he made," Schmeichel told Premier League Productions.

"I'm trying to speak to him about what it's like being at Manchester United and why whatever [mistakes] you've made, you have to put it in a box and put it to the side.

"If you make a mistake in the game, it might be a mistake we can see, it might be a mistake that we don't see. But you wait to think about it and analyse it after the game or at night or whatever.

"You have to be there for the next moment. If you're not, you'll make the next mistake. And now he's upset the whole team. They will now not trust him even more, and my god, it's not good."

Ex-Man United goalkeeper Paul Woolston also said that it was "very poor goalkeeping" to allow Jensen's effort to find the back of the net.

"If I'm inside that dressing room then I would be disappointed with myself. There are errors leading up to it, but that's a very, very soft goal to concede," he told MUTV.

"It's quite similar to the ones he has been conceding with them going under him. Everyone is looking at him at the minute and he hasn't done himself any favours with, I would say, very poor goalkeeping.

"He should have saved it and if he's saying something different in the dressing room then I would be disappointed with him. He should be saving shots like that for Manchester United.

"If you come in as number one, you have got to be saving that. I said pre-match, there are big gloves to fill from a goalkeeper saving you 18 points a season, then you have Onana not being as strong as you want as a goalkeeper."

Onana penned a five-year contract at Old Trafford upon his arrival from Inter, and he will be looking to bounce back when Man United resume their campaign away to Sheffield United after the international break.
