Robbie Savage: 'Manchester United will be lucky to finish fourth'

Robbie Savage believes that Manchester United will struggle to improve on their fourth-place finish of last season because of the lack of firpower in their squad.

Robbie Savage has claimed that Manchester United will be fortunate to finish in fourth place in the Premier League this season due to the lack of forwards in their squad.

The Red Devils moved to sign Anthony Martial in a £36m deal from Monaco, while they also retained the services of keeper David de Gea as the Spaniard's proposed move to Real Madrid fell through at the eleventh hour due to a problem with the paperwork.

However, Savage feels that he will have to revise his prediction of United as title winners because of their lack of firepower, as they boast only Martial, Wayne Rooney and youngster James Wilson as strikers in their squad.

He wrote in the The Mirror: "After another embarrassing deadline day, I'm not just concerned that Manchester United lost the plot in the transfer window. I'm worried that they are losing their identity as a football club.

"Before a ball was kicked last month, I fancied United to win the title because their early-summer transfer business had been excellent, especially in central midfield, and they were only a couple of major signings away from justifying my optimism.

"Now they will be lucky to improve on last year's fourth place. How on earth they reached a farcical situation with four goalkeepers but only two central strikers – Wayne Rooney and £36m punt Anthony Martial – in their squad is beyond me."

Louis van Gaal's men are currently fifth in the Premier League after four matches this season.
