Manchester United's David de Gea wants legendary status

David de Gea is aiming to become a Manchester United legend, just like fellow goalkeepers Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar.

David de Gea has revealed that he wants to be held in the same esteem as former Manchester United goalkeepers Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar.

The Spanish keeper came close to leaving Old Trafford in the summer when only a string of administrative errors prevented him from joining Real Madrid.

However, having since signed a new contract at United, the 25-year-old has stressed that his focus is now on earning himself legendary status among the club's supporters.

"I'm happy, I'm enjoying it and I believe in the team," Sky Sports News quotes De Gea as saying.

"[Schmeichel and Van der Sar] were the greatest goalkeepers in the Premier League, they are legends for this club and that is what I want."

Recent speculation has claimed that Madrid are preparing to reignite their interest in De Gea, despite the fact that they were recently hit with a transfer ban.
