Michael Carrick aiming to give Louis van Gaal a "selection headache"

Michael Carrick promises to give Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal a "selection headache" following a six-month spell on the sidelines.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has vowed to play his way into contention under manager Louis van Gaal as he nears a return to fitness.

The 33-year-old is yet to play under the Dutchman after spending nearly six months on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

United's midfield has undergone a degree of change in that period following Van Gaal's appointment, with new boys Daley Blind and Ander Herrera featuring prominently.

However, Carrick, who was named on the bench in Monday's 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion, aims to give the manager a "selection headache" upon returning.

"I don't know [where I will play]," he told the club's official website. "You'll have to ask the manager.

"I'm here to play. I don't know what the manager's plans are for me but I'm trying to be fit and available for the next game. I'll leave the selection headache up to him."

Carrick is expected to be named in the matchday squad for Sunday's visit of Chelsea at Old Trafford.
