Liverpool are reportedly in contract talks with Ibrahima Konate following Joel Matip's cruciate ligament injury that could see him miss the rest of the league season.

Liverpool have reportedly opened contract talks with Ibrahima Konate following Joel Matip's cruciate ligament injury that could see him miss the rest of the 2023-24 Premier League season.

Konate came through the ranks at Sochaux in France and made 13 appearances for them before he was lured away by RB Leipzig in 2014.

The German outfit acquired Konate on a free transfer, and during his four-year tenure in Germany, the 24-year-old established himself as one of the top centre-backs in the Bundesliga.

According to French news outlet Le10 Sport, Liverpool executives have now commenced talks with the French international's representatives over the possibility of a contract extension at Anfield.

The report adds that the new deal will see Konate's wages increased from the current £70,000 a week, and the fresh terms are expected to see him remain at the club beyond his current contract expiry date in 2026.

It is understood that Paris Saint-Germain have been admirers of the 24-year-old for some time now and could consider a move for him if he decides against a new deal with his current employers.

The central defender is now an important member of Jurgen Klopp's side and has already featured 15 times across all competitions this season, taking him to 68 appearances during his time on Merseyside.

Konate made the switch from RB Leipzig to Liverpool back in 2021 for a fee of around £36m.
