Liverpool stumble in title race as West Ham United claim point at Anfield

Liverpool fall further behind in the Premier League title race after being held to a 2-2 draw against West Ham United in Sunday's clash at Anfield.

Liverpool have fallen further behind in the Premier League title race after being held to a 2-2 draw against West Ham United in Sunday's clash at Anfield.

The Reds were heavy favourites to claim all three points ahead of kickoff, but their defensive frailties were exposed as two errors at the back cost them dearly.

In the end Jurgen Klopp's side benefited from a West Ham mistake just to pull level, but Slaven Bilic's charges held firm to come away with a point that edges them out of the bottom three.

Liverpool edged ahead after just five minutes played when Adam Lallana found space inside the box to rifle a half-volley past Darren Randolph in the Hammers' net.

It looked like the travelling fans would be in for a long afternoon but they found themselves level just before the half-hour mark, courtesy of a Dimitri Payet free kick that Loris Karius failed to connect with properly.

With just six minutes left in the first half, a Havard Nordtveit ball over the top bounced off Jordan Henderson's head and wrong-footed Joel Matip, allowing Michail Antonio to flick the ball around the keeper and over the line.

The Reds were given a reprieve early in the second half when a seemingly tame Sadio Mane cross was spilled by Randolph and Divock Origi was in the right place at the right time to fire home via the inside of the post.

Origi's goal galvanised Anfield and soon enough Liverpool were laying siege to the West Ham goal, but the visiting defence was in inspired form.

Randolph, meanwhile, made amends for his earlier error with a fine one-handed save from a long-range Henderson effort.

The result means that the Merseyside giants find themselves six points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, while West Ham climb to 17th place, one point clear of the bottom three.
