Brendan Rodgers: 'Incredible Simon Mignolet answered critics'

Brendan Rodgers says that under-fire Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet answered his critics in the 1-0 win over Stoke City in the Premier League.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has hailed under-fire goalkeeper Simon Mignolet for his performance in this afternoon's 1-0 win over Stoke City at Anfield.

The Belgian pulled off a series of crucial stops - including an injury-time save to deny Bojan - as Glen Johnson's 85th-minute winner proved enough for the hosts to end a five-match winless Premier League run.

Former Reds keeper Bruce Grobbelaar launched a scathing assessment of the 26-year-old earlier this week, but Rodgers says that the "absolutely incredible" Mignolet answered his critics today.

"Simon Mignolet, who has taken a lot of criticism, was absolutely incredible today. He didn't have a great deal to do but the three saves he had to make were very important," he told BBC Sport.

"The last seven minutes of injury time become a bit of a war and my group stood up to that and really showed their character."

The Merseysiders, who sit 11th in the Premier League table, travel to Leicester City on Tuesday night.
