Rene Meulensteen: 'Sascha Riether apologised for mistake'

Rene Meulensteen reveals that Sascha Riether was quick to apologise for the mistake which led to Liverpool's winning goal on Wednesday.

Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen has revealed that Sascha Riether was eager to apologise for the mistake he made which led to Liverpool's winning goal in the 3-2 defeat on Wednesday.

Riether brought down Daniel Sturridge inside the box to concede a penalty in stoppage time and give Steven Gerrard the opportunity to seal the victory for the visitors at Craven Cottage.

"The third goal is a silly challenge from Sascha," Meulensteen told reporters. "He shouldn't have done it.

"The first thing he said when he came into the dressing room was 'sorry I shouldn't have done it'. We lost 3-2 which is hard to take, with the effort the boys put in they should have had a point I think."

Fulham remain bottom of the Premier League following the loss.
