David Trezeguet backs Juventus for European success

Former Juventus striker David Trezeguet backs the Italian champions to challenge for the Champions League title next season.

Former Juventus striker David Trezeguet has backed the Italian champions to challenge for the Champions League title in the 2016-17 campaign.

The Old Lady won a fifth straight Serie A crown last season, but have not lifted the European Cup since 1996 and were knocked out by Bayern Munich in the round of 16 last term.

Trezeguet, however, has claimed that Juve's summer business and growing confidence will make the club one of the main contenders for the top prize in European football next season.

"I agree 100% with Massimiliano Allegri that Juventus are at the same level as Bayern, Barcelona and Madrid. Those are the four top teams in Europe," Trezeguet told Tuttosport.

"The arrival of players such as Miralem Pjanic and Dani Alves shows that Juventus have reached the highest level. Those players clearly understand our goals and want to play their part. Dani Alves made it clear that he wanted to join Juventus and that says a lot. If players of his calibre join the club, that shows people believe in this project.

"There is no need to hide the fact that the Champions League is very important to us. We want the Scudetto, Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana, but the Champions League is very important."

Trezeguet, 38, scored 138 goals in 245 league appearances for Juve between 2000 and 2010.
