Tony Cascarino: "Huge test" for Rene Meulensteen

Talking to Sports Mole, Tony Cascarino warns new Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen that he has a tough challenge ahead of him.

Tony Cascarino has claimed that Rene Meulensteen has a "huge test" ahead of him if he is to keep Fulham in the Premier League.

The Dutchman, who had recently joined the club as part of Martin Jol's coaching staff, was handed the managerial job when his fellow countryman was sacked on Sunday evening.

With the West Londoners 18th in the Premier League standings ahead of tonight's home match against Tottenham Hotspur, football analyst for The Times Cascarino has told Sports Mole that Meulensteen has plenty of work to do in the upcoming January transfer window if the team are to retain their current status.

"It's a huge test. How many assistants have been given an opportunity and not succeeded? It's quite a few. He's now got the opportunity and has some vast coaching experience, but what he needs is players that are good enough," said the former Republic of Ireland international.

"Nobody can work miracles and if the players aren't good enough, you are going to be relegated. They have to get to the transfer window and change a few things, especially where the centre-forwards are concerned because as it stands, they are well short."

Fulham have won just three matches this term, having scored 11 and conceded 24 goals from their 13 outings.
