Chelsea defender John Terry will not be considered for selection by England until he officially comes out of retirement, according to FA chairman David Bernstein.

The 32-year-old quit international football in September 2012 after the FA opened a disciplinary case against him for racially abusing Anton Ferdinand in 2011. He was subsequently banned for four games.

Bernstein said: "He's in retirement. He has not announced he's coming out of retirement — and if he did the initial decision would be down to the manager.

"John Terry has always taken his football very seriously. Therefore, I take his retirement seriously. Until I hear to the contrary, he stays retired."

Terry has made 78 appearances for England since making his debut in 2003.
