Eddie Howe is delighted that back-up goalkeeper Artur Boruc has put pen to paper on a one-year extension to his Bournemouth contract.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has said that the new contract awarded to Artur Boruc is just rewards for the goalkeeper's commitment behind the scenes.

Boruc has agreed a one-year extension at the Vitality Stadium, seeing him through until the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

The 38-year-old has made 112 appearances for the Cherries since initially arriving on loan from Southampton in 2014, but just six of those came this season, each in cup competitions.

Howe is happy that his back-up keeper has agreed to stay on for another year, however, telling the club's official website: "Artur fully deserves his new contract.

"He has been a key player for us behind the scenes this year, forming a great team of senior goalkeepers with Asmir Begovic and Adam Federici, while also inspiring the younger goalkeepers in the club.

"This is the best I have seen him train since he has been with us, which is a huge compliment considering he hasn't been playing regularly. He has great ability, still has the hunger to play and would be ready for action whenever called upon."

Boruc added: "I'm very pleased and happy to stay here for another year. It is never easy to watch the team playing when you are not involved but I am fighting every day for the number one spot and whenever the manager gives me a chance, I give it 100%.

"I am also trying to help our young goalkeepers who are at the start of their careers, which is very important to me. I am settled here; I love this club and my family love it here too. I believe I still have a part to play and that is why I signed a new deal."

Boruc's most recent Premier League appearance came in the 2-1 win against Burnley just over a year ago.
