Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe says that midfielder Lewis Cook deserves his England call-up after impressing on both the domestic and international scene.

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe has claimed that midfielder Lewis Cook deserves a chance in the England squad after a bright start to the season.

Cook has made just four Premier League appearances this season, but the 20-year-old has been drafted into the England setup ahead of Tuesday's friendly with Brazil at Wembley Stadium.

However, Cook has been a regular with England between Under-16 and Under-21 level, and Howe says that the former Leeds United man is being rewarded for his progression through the ranks.

The 39-year-old told the Bournemouth Echo: "Everybody is delighted for Lewis. This is recognition for the progress he has made in a short period of time with us and over a longer period with the England development groups.

"He has had a very good start to the season and been very consistent for us. He is improving rapidly and that is also testament to the work he has done with the various England age groups.

"He has turned in a series of outstanding performances and being asked to captain England under-21 is a great achievement in itself. This call up is another forward from that."

Cook has made just 12 starts for Bournemouth in all competitions since signing for the Cherries ahead of the 2016-17 campaign.
