Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak emerges as a transfer target for Barcelona, according to a report.

Barcelona are reportedly interested in bringing Swedish forward Alexander Isak back to La Liga.

The 23-year-old made the move to Newcastle United from Real Sociedad in August 2022, and he featured on 29 occasions for the Magpies during the 2022-23 campaign, scoring 11 goals and registering three assists.

Isak has also started this season in strong form, scoring twice in four league outings, taking his record to 12 goals and three assists in 31 matches for Newcastle.

The Sweden international has a contract at St James' Park until June 2028, and Newcastle are in a strong position to keep hold of him due to their financial power.

However, according to Fichajes, Barcelona are determined to bring the striker to Camp Nou in the near future, potentially as a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

The report claims that the Catalan outfit's head coach Xavi is a huge admirer of Isak, who started his professional career with AIK before moving to Borussia Dortmund in 2017.

The forward only struck one goal in 13 first-team appearances for Dortmund, but he excelled at Real Sociedad, managing 44 goals and eight assists in 132 outings in all competitions.

Isak netted 33 times in 105 La Liga appearances, while he has also found the back of the net on 10 occasions in 42 appearances for Sweden.

Lewandowski has been in strong form for Barcelona this season, scoring three goals and registering three assists in five La Liga appearances.

The 35-year-old is entering the latter stages of his career, although he has a contract at Camp Nou until June 2026, with the option of a further 12 months.

Lewandowski was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia over the summer, but the Poland international has said that he never considered leaving Barcelona.

"I don't even think about it," Lewandowski told AS. "I'm super happy in Barcelona, in the team, in the city, with my family. As a person, I am happy.

"Before the coronavirus pandemic, the idea of MLS was firmly in my head, but somehow I changed my mind afterward. After the Barcelona chapter, it's hard to imagine going there."

Lewandowski scored once and provided two assists in Barcelona's 5-0 win over Real Betis on Saturday, while Isak was an unused substitute in Newcastle's 1-0 win over Brentford in the Premier League on the same night.
