Nathaniel Clyne rescues point for Southampton against Aston Villa

Nathaniel Clyne scores nine minutes from time as Southampton grab a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa.

Nathaniel Clyne scored a late equaliser for Southampton as they held Aston Villa to a 1-1 draw in their Premier League match this evening.

The visitors started the game brightly, with Morgan Schneiderlin and Sadio Mane both firing efforts wide in the early stages.

However, it was Villa who took the lead when Gabriel Agbonlahor latched on to a long clearance from Ciaran Clark, before rounding the onrushing Fraser Forster and sliding the ball into the net.

Mane then came close to scoring an equaliser for the Saints with a curling effort from the edge of the box that was tipped wide of the post by Brad Guzan.

Jose Fonte was the next Southampton player to threaten Guzan's goal, but after meeting Schneiderlin's corner, he headed straight at the keeper.

The visitors continued to put pressure on the Villa defence and Dusan Tadic saw his curling free kick beaten away by the keeper.

Andreas Weimann then had the chance to give Villa a two-goal lead, but following a fast break he could only fire over the bar after being picked out by Agbonlahor.

Southampton soon made the hosts pay for that miss as Clyne arrived to slot home Ryan Bertrand's cross from just inside the box.

The Saints pushed hard for a winning goal, but Villa were able to hold on and claim their first point at home since the end of August.
