Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez opens up on his side's convincing victory over former club Arsenal, describing the occasion as "emotional".

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has opened up on his side's "emotional" victory over former club Arsenal at the weekend.

Dean Smith's men outclassed the Gunners on their own turf and ran out 3-0 winners at the Emirates Stadium, with Ollie Watkins netting twice after a Bukayo Saka own goal in the first half.

Martinez had little to do upon his return to North London as Villa dominated the game, and the former Arsenal man has now lifted the lid on what it was like to play - and win - against the club where he spent 10 years as a player.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Martinez said: "I am a little bit emotional, to be honest with you. Two months ago, I was lifting two trophies with them and I had been at Arsenal for 10 years.

"When I play against them now I just want to win. I am a winner. I am Argentinian. I respect them."

Martinez received plenty of plaudits for his performances in an Arsenal shirt following Bernd Leno's injury last season, but the Argentine was only considered a backup for most of his years at the Emirates Stadium.
