Pedro Pascal has admitted that filming his death scene on The Last of Us was an unfamiliar experience that led to "shock and heartbreak".
In the most recent episode of the show, Pascal's character Joel was savagely beaten to death by Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) as revenge for him having murdered her doctor father in order to protect Ellie (Bella Ramsey).
While the scene was shocking for many viewers, for those familiar with the game on which the series is based the twist was already known to be coming at some point.
"It's not like they said, 'Hey, we kill you at the beginning of season two', but it was always an understanding that it would stay true to the source material in a specific way and that the, let's say, practical and exclusive obligation would be for season one," Pascal said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "It was just a matter of how and when."
Recalling the mood on set when the scene was filmed a year ago, he continued: "I've never experienced anything like I did that day where I stepped onto set in full makeup and then killed the vibe completely as soon as anyone set their eyes on me.
"This kind of shock and heartbreak... it was weird to be on the receiving end of that. It's like the extreme version of, 'Is there something on my face?' I really could see this sort of grief take over everyone's look in their eyes."
The Last of Us continues Sundays at 9pm on HBO in the US and simultaneously at 2am Mondays on Sky Atlantic in the UK and Ireland.
