Love Island makes a modest start in the ratings, according to overnight figures.

The return of Love Island brought in decent - if slightly underwhelming - ratings for ITV2 last night, early figures show.

The seventh series of the dating show, which is back in the schedules after a year off due to COVID, brought in an average of 2.47m (11.9%) for the channel between 9pm and 10.35pm.

The figure is down almost a million on the 3.42m (19.3%) who watched the equivalent episode in 2019, although the ratings eventually grew to 5.9m once catch-up viewing was factored in.

Love Island found itself unfortunately scheduled opposite a thrilling Euro 2020 match between France and Switzerland, which was broadcast on ITV between 7.15pm and 11.15pm.

The game went the distance - concluding with world champions France being eliminated on penalties - and averaged an impressive 7.52m (40.4%).

A peak audience of 11.26m (65.7%) were watching at 10.43pm as Kylian Mbappe missed his spot kick to seal the contest for Switzerland.

Elsewhere, BBC One changed up its schedule to accommodate Andy Murray's return to Wimbledon, with an average of 3.34m (17.0%) watching between 7pm and 10pm.

As a result EastEnders was switched to BBC Two with disastrous results, as just 1.44m (8.0%) tuned in for the first episode at 7pm - the worst ratings in the soap's 36-year history.
