A peak audience of over 31 million tune in to see England's penalty heartbreak during the final of Euro 2020.

England's heartbreak in the final of Euro 2020 delivered an astonishing peak of more than 31 million viewers last night, according to early ratings figures.

The game, which Gareth Southgate's men lost to Italy on penalties, was shown on both BBC One and ITV - and as expected the BBC's coverage proved more popular, with more than four times the viewers of its commercial rival.

Overall, BBC One averaged 17.75m (66.7%) between 6.20pm and 11.40pm, while ITV had 4.02m (15.4%) between 6.30pm and 11.55pm.

The peak audience came at 9.56pm as the game entered extra time, with a mammoth 25.32m watching on BBC One and 5.82m on ITV for a combined total of 31.13m.

ITV's individual peak came at 10.38pm during the penalty shootout when 6.20m were watching.
