The BBC pulls in the highest ratings on general election night, drawing over 4 million viewers for the result of the exit poll.

More than 7 million viewers tuned in on Thursday night to see the result of the exit poll for the general election, according to early ratings figures.

At 10pm the poll was released - correctly predicting a Labour landslide - and in the hour that followed, BBC One's coverage triumphed with 4.2m (33.7%), albeit a third down on the ratings for the last election in 2019.

ITV pulled in 1.3m (10.2%) across the hour, while Channel 4's coverage, which included inserts from Gogglebox, managed a respectable 930k (7.4%).

Overall, from 10pm until 2am - the cutoff time for overnight ratings - the BBC averaged 2.9m, with 231k watching a sign language simulcast on BBC News.

Over the same period ITV averaged 836k, Channel 4 had 662k, Sky News managed 372k and GB News pulled in 86k.
