Hollywood legend Betty White died as a result of a stroke suffered on Christmas Day, it is confirmed.

Betty White's death last month was a result of a stroke she had suffered six days earlier, it has been confirmed.

The Hollywood legend died on New Year's Eve at the age of 99, less than three weeks short of her milestone 100th birthday.

According to TMZ, White's death certificate lists the cause of death as "a cerebrovascular accident" resulting from a stroke six days earlier on Christmas Day.

The publication cites sources as saying that White was "alert and coherent after the stroke" and died peacefully in her sleep on the morning of December 31.

On January 17 - what would have been White's 100th birthday - a one-night-only documentary, Betty White: A Celebration, will be screened in select cinemas around the US.
