Ofcom approves Love Sport axe in favour of new Asian station

Broadcasting regulator Ofcom approves the closure of Love Sport in favour of a new radio station targeting a young Asian audience.

Broadcasting regulator Ofcom has approved a request to close the Love Sport talk radio station in favour of a new channel targeting a young Asian demographic.

The company behind Love Sport, which broadcasts via AM in North London as well as nationwide through DAB, applied to Ofcom in May seeking a change of format to the licence it had been granted to broadcast.

In its place a new channel called Asian FX was proposed - described as "a contemporary Asian/urban music-led station for young British Asians aged 15-44 featuring the music of British Asian artists and the latest/classic Bollywood tracks and world music".

Having consulted on the request, Ofcom has now given the go-ahead for the change in format, although it is unclear when Love Sport will close and Asian FX will launch.

The venture is headed up by the former editor of The Sun, Kelvin MacKenzie.
