Jonathan Pryce to take over as Prince Philip on The Crown

The Two Popes and Game of Thrones actor Jonathan Pryce joins the cast of The Crown as Prince Philip.

Jonathan Pryce has joined the cast of The Crown in the role of Prince Philip for the Netflix epic's final two seasons.

The 73-year-old actor - known for The Two Popes and Game of Thrones - will take over from Tobias Menzies as The Queen's husband in a role that was previously played by Matt Smith.

Imelda Staunton will replace Olivia Colman as Elizabeth II, while Lesley Manville will portray her youngster sister Princess Margaret.

Filming on the fifth and sixth seasons of the show, which will follow the monarch's life through the 1990s and into the early 21st century, is not due to begin until next summer, meaning that season five will not be released until 2022 at the earliest.

Season four was shot before the coronavirus pandemic and is on course to be released this autumn.
