'80s band Depeche Mode announce the "untimely" death of keyboardist Andrew Fletcher.

Depeche Mode have announced the unexpected death of keyboardist Andrew Fletcher at the age of 60.

The band were formed in 1980 by Fletcher - known better as 'Fletch' - along with Dave Gahan, Michael Gore and Vince Clarke and have an extensive discography that includes iconic songs such as 'Just Can't Get Enough' and 'Enjoy The Silence'.

In a statement on social media on Thursday evening, the group wrote: "We are shocked and filled with overwhelming sadness with the untimely passing of our dear friend, family member, and bandmate Andy 'Fletch' Fletcher.

"Fletch had a true heart of gold and was always there when you needed support, a lively conversation, a good laugh, or a cold pint.

"Our hearts are with his family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts and respect their privacy in this difficult time."

Fletch is survived by his wife Grainne and their two children Megan and Joe.

A cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
