Biggest live sports events for TV

As a whole, the UK is a nation of sports lovers and whether that means being there in the crowd or watching at home on TV, us Brits love nothing more than being a part of the sporting action.

For decades, we've participated in a whole host of different sports with the likes of football, rugby and cricket just some of the sports that have been created in the UK and transported around the world.

Our love of sport has been music to the ears of TV creators with millions of us signing up to subscription services like Sky Sports and BT Sport to make sure that we have every single kick, pass and shot streamed into our homes from across the world. As well as plenty of action on terrestrial TV through the likes of BBC's coverage of the Olympics and ITV's current coverage of horse racing.

In more recent times, the sporting world has been reliant on the ability for people to continue watching sport at home, and that means sports like horse racing have seen record viewing figures during the national lockdowns across the country. TV and streaming has never been more important, as ultimately keep the world ticking over since the start of 2020.

With that in mind, we are going to take a look at some of the biggest live sports events for TV, covering everything from football to athletics, plus a few others in between.

Cheltenham Horse Racing Festival

Although the Grand National might be the biggest horse racing in the world, it's the Cheltenham Festival that always continues to pull in the viewing figures as the feature event in the jumps racing calendar each year. Taking place annually in March, it's practically a World Cup of horse racing with human and equine participants from across the UK, Ireland and often even France.

As an event it attracts TV cameras from all of those nations, with Racing TV and ITV Racing just two of the companies that produce live coverage of the four day meeting. It's also an event that is popular with sports betting punters, with special offers and horse racing promotions given out from a whole host of bookmakers across freebets.com cheltenham betting section. With betting available on all the races, including the Champion Hurdle and the Gold Cup, it's a meeting that's not to be missed as a racing or general sports fan.

Wimbledon

There is arguably no more quintessential British sporting event than that of Wimbledon. With grass courts, strawberries and cream, and even the Royal box, it showcases British tradition to the rest of the world. In fact, the tennis tournament is so popular that getting hold of tickets in the ballot is almost impossible, so much so that people regularly create a queue through the local parks just to be able to get a glimpse of the action through a day ticket.

The best place to watch the tournament unfold is through your TV at home. Major channels such as the BBC host brilliant coverage of Wimbledon, and offer a range of different matches to watch through their red button service.

FA Cup Final

The prestige of the FA Cup has slightly waned in recent years thanks to the rise of European competitions like the Champions League, but the tradition has certainly not and for most English football fans, the FA Cup final is still the highlight of the season.

It's the only competition that includes every team in the English football pyramid, meaning that non-league sides are regularly drawn against Premier League clubs in what is often described as a "David versus Goliath" cup tie.

Usually taking place in May each year, the final is normally shown live on the BBC or BT Sport, who produce live coverage of the big match from Wembley Stadium in London. Millions from across the world tune in to see who lifts the cup, with the final going to extra time and penalties if a winner can't be decided after 90 minutes.
