Emmerdale will air a special episode next week which promises to reveal "the real John Sugden".

Emmerdale has confirmed that "the real John Sugden" will finally be revealed in a special flashback episode.

The character - played by Oliver Farnworth - arrived in the village last summer as the long-lost brother of Victoria (Isabel Hodgins) and soon got into a relationship with Aaron (Danny Miller), the ex-husband of his half-brother Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley).

Since he showed up in the village, however, there have been suggestions that John may not be all that he appears and in the special episode his "true persona" and "the secrets he has been keeping from everyone" will be revealed.

"Since enigmatic and inscrutable John Sugden arrived on our screens last summer, he's managed to hide some pretty big secrets from his family and friends," said the soap's producer Laura Shaw.

"As his clandestine acts are revealed, the audience has an opportunity to really get inside John's mind and to finally understand exactly what this mysterious character is really about."

Emmerdale airs Mondays to Fridays from 7am on ITVX and at 7.30pm on ITV1.
