Alan Cumming has been confirmed for a guest role in the upcoming new series of Doctor Who.

The Scottish actor and host of the US version of The Traitors will star in the second episode of the new series, voicing a cartoon character called Mr Ring-a-Ding.

A synopsis for the episode reads: "He's a happy, funny, singalong cartoon, who lives in Sunny Town with his friend Sunshine Sally. However, in 1952, after years of repeats in cinemas across the land, Mr Ring-a-Ding suddenly looks beyond the screen and sees the real world outside - and the consequences are terrifying."

"Only Alan Cumming could give a runaway cartoon so much wit, malice, danger and fun," said showrunner Russell T Davies. "He makes the whole universe of Doctor Who wilder and madder than ever, and it's an absolute honour to welcome him on board the TARDIS."

The new series, which sees Varada Sethu join Ncuti Gatwa's The Doctor as new companion Belinda Chandra, has also been confirmed to launch on Saturday, April 12.

Unlike the last series, where episodes premiered on iPlayer at midnight, they will now debut at 8am each Saturday morning on iPlayer then air on BBC One that evening.

Viewers outside of the UK can view the show on Disney+, where episodes will drop simultaneously with iPlayer each Saturday - at 9am across Europe, 3am on the US East Coast and midnight on the West Coast.

The news means that Cumming's episode will be released on Saturday, April 19.
