Ryan Thomas is to reprise his role as Jason Grimshaw in Coronation Street for a short stint, it has emerged.
The character's comeback after nine years is to coincide with the exit of his on-screen mother Sue Cleaver, who is leaving the soap this summer after 25 years playing matriarch Eileen Grimshaw.
The news also marks the first time that Thomas, who played Jason from 2000 to 2016, will act alongside Gareth Pierce, who replaced Bruno Langley as Jason's brother Todd in 2020.
"It was a no brainer for Ryan to return when he was asked - it's all for Sue," a source told The Sun.
"She's like a second mum to him and he was willing to do anything to make her send off as special as she deserves it to be.
"He's not acted for a while so it's a bit daunting but he played Jason for so long that he's looking forward to going back to the cobbles."
Also back for Eileen's swansong is her half-sister Julie Carp (Katy Cavanagh), although in a devastating twist she has revealed that she has terminal cancer.
Thomas's return to filming later this month suggests that he could be back on screen in late May or early June.
