Rovers Return, Roy's Rolls to be takeaway-only in Coronation Street

ITV's soaps chief confirms that the Rovers Return and Roy's Rolls will be takeaway-only when Coronation Street resumes filming new episodes next week.

Iconic Coronation Street pub the Rovers Return and the Roy's Rolls cafe will be takeaway-only when the soap returns to filming new episodes.

Full production on the soap has been shut down for the last two-and-a-half months due to the coronavirus pandemic but will resume again next week after the government cleared TV crews to return to work.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain today, ITV Studios' MD of continuing drama John Whiston revealed that coronavirus will only be "lightly" covered in the show when it returns.

However in keeping with general UK guidelines, the Rovers and Roy's Rolls will not be open for business as usual and will instead be seen serving only takeaway food and drinks.

"We will be referencing Covid, but lightly in Corrie," Whiston revealed. "The Rovers will be a takeaway place, so will the cafe.

"You will see the odd person wearing a mask out... Underworld may be making PPE equipment.

"If things loosen up then it is easier to build it into the script than to add in social distancing at a later date. We will still be changing things up a lot."

The first episodes of Corrie to be filmed after lockdown started will air on ITV from early July.
