Channique Sterling-Brown discusses Dee-Dee's role in helping to mend the Bailey family rift in Coronation Street.

Coronation Street star Channique Sterling-Brown has said that her character Dee-Dee feels torn between all sides following the recent rift in the Bailey family.

Over Christmas, with matriarch Aggie (Lorna Laidlaw) still away, dad Ed (Trevor Michael Georges) admitted that his gambling problems had resurfaced, putting the family finances in a dire state.

While Dee-Dee was sympathetic towards her dad's illness, brother Michael (Ryan Russell) reacted angrily and kicked him out of the family home.

Sterling-Brown, who joined the soap 18 months ago, thinks that Dee-Dee's relatively late arrival in Weatherfield has enabled her to have a different perspective on Ed's situation.

"I think she always has felt a responsibility to keep her eye on the ball with her mum being away and has kind of taken on that role," she said.

"I definitely think she's felt the pressure to step up especially because she wasn't there the last time it happened. I think she's trying to keep everyone sweet and look after everyone but in the process of that, things are starting to spiral out of her control and I think that's something she's not used to."

"The fact she's not been home for a long time means she has more sympathy and a bit more compassion in the situation and can see it from Ed's perspective with his addiction," she continued.

"Michael is feeling the burden from a personal perspective and is really putting his blinkers on, especially having been through it all before. Both of their reactions are justified, but just completely different."

In scenes airing next week, things go from bad to worse when Ed's yard goes up in flames, leaving Dee-Dee and Michael with questions about how the fire started.

"She's a lawyer and it's her job to think of the worst case scenario and prepare for every event," Sterling-Brown explained.

"I do think she's going to have to walk a very fine line whilst trying to protect everyone but also find out the truth. I think she will feel compromised in that."

Coronation Street continues Monday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
