Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod dismisses the idea of bringing back former cast members for the 60th anniversary as "a cheap trick".

Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod has categorically ruled out bringing back former cast members to mark the soap's 60th anniversary.

Speculation has been rife that a number of former stars, including the likes of Corrie legend Julie Goodyear, could come back in time to mark the milestone birthday in early December.

Speaking to reporters about plans for the occasion, however, MacLeod dismissed the idea as a "cheap trick" and said that the current cast is "fabulous" enough as it is.

"In terms of whether there's any other returns mooted, I mean, the answer to that has consistently on my part been no," he revealed. "I feel like I love our cast.

"I think we've got an incredible bunch of legends that are already in the show and just sort of having a revolving door of former cast coming in to do cameos just for a brief moment of the audience going, 'Oh wow, it's them,' Just would have felt a bit like a cheap trick, dare I say.

"So no, I've got no plans at all. And in fact, we're past the point where I could develop plans to have returning cast doing cameos and things.

"And as I say, I think our current cast is fabulous and we've got more than enough legends in the show already without trying to sort of add some more."

Bill Roache is expected to feature heavily in the episodes, having appeared on the soap since its first ever episode in 1960.
