ITV announces that it will broadcast a second debate in the run-up to the general election featuring "senior representatives" from seven political parties.

ITV has announced plans to broadcast a second debate in the run-up to the general election featuring representatives from seven political parties.

The broadcaster will stage a head-to-head debate between Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Keir Starmer on Tuesday and will follow it up the week afterwards with a more expansive programme.

Julie Etchingham will again assume hosting duties, with leaders or "senior representatives" from the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Reform UK, the SNP, Plaid Cymru and the Green Party facing off against one another.

Neither Sunak or Starmer is expected to participate in the debate and will likely send members of the cabinet and shadow cabinet respectively in their stead.

Michael Jermey, ITV's director of news, said: "ITV's debate programmes will allow millions of viewers to see and hear the politicians debate the big issues facing the country. Many of our viewers tell us they greatly value the TV debates.

"We're pleased that ITV will be able to provide a forum in which voters can question the political leaders and in which the politicians can debate directly with each other."

The ITV Election Debate 2024 will air from 8.30pm to 10pm on Thursday, June 13 on ITV1 and STV.
