Disney+ announces that it has passed the 100-million subscriber mark in just 16 months.

Disney+ has revealed that it has surpassed 100 million subscribers worldwide just 16 months after its launch.

The impressive achievement comes after a year in which audiences increasingly turned to streaming services due to the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the launch of multiple big-budget shows - including spinoffs from the MCU and Star Wars - exclusively on Disney+.

The service took just five months to hit the 50-million mark, surpassing all expectations, and in a statement today, Disney confirmed that it has now reached a new milestone.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek told investors: "The enormous success of Disney+, which has now surpassed 100 million subscribers, has inspired us to be even more ambitious, and to significantly increase our investment in the development of high-quality content.

"In fact, we set a target of 100+ new titles per year, and this includes Disney Animation, Disney Live Action, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. Our direct-to-consumer business is the company's top priority, and our robust pipeline of content will continue to fuel its growth."

Netflix remains the market leader of worldwide streamers, with 203.7 million customers at the end of last year after adding more than 35 million in 2020.
