Amazon announces the first price rise in eight years for subscription to its Prime service, effective from September.

Amazon has announced the first price rise for its Prime service in the UK in eight years, effective from September.

The move comes amid a cost-of-living rise which is seeing domestic inflation running close to 10% and prices of everyday goods and services surging across the board.

From September 15, the monthly cost of Amazon Prime will rise from £7.99 to £8.99, while those on an annual subscription will pay £95 instead of £79, effective from their next annual renewal after September 15.

A Prime subscription gives users free unlimited next-day delivery of most products purchased through Amazon, as well as access to the Prime Video streaming service and other benefits.

In an email sent to subscribers, the company said: "We continue to focus on making Prime even more valuable for members. This is the first time we have changed the price of Prime in the UK since 2014.

"During this time, we have significantly increased the number of products available with unlimited, fast Prime delivery; added and expanded ultra-fast fresh grocery delivery; and added more high-quality digital entertainment, including TV, movies, music, games, and books.

"Prime Video in particular has increased the number of TV series and movies on offer, including Amazon Originals, as well as live sports coverage, such as the Premier League and Autumn Nations Series."

The price increase follows similar moves from other top streamers so far in 2022. Netflix's basic and standard packages have gone up by £1 a month to £6.99 and £10.99 respectively, with the premium package rising £2 to £15.99, while Disney+ has risen by £2 a month to £7.99.
