Jodie Whittaker will reportedly step down from Doctor Who in 2022 after a new series and two specials.

Jodie Whittaker will reportedly star in two more special episodes following the next series of Doctor Who before she leaves her role as The Doctor.

Earlier this year the actress, who became the show's first female Doctor in 2017, was reported to be quitting the show at the end of the next series, which is currently being filmed.

According to The Mirror, however, Whittaker has agreed to appear in two special episodes after the new series and will then hand over the reins to a new actor or actress.

A source told the newspaper: "As ever bosses are staying tight-lipped about what they have planned, but with filming still ongoing they clearly have plans for episodes to be playing out much later into 2022 – so there's still more to come for Jodie's Doctor."

The new series - Whittaker's third - has been cut from 10 episodes to just eight due to coronavirus and is expected to air on BBC One from later this year.

The BBC has yet to comment on stories surrounding Whittaker's potential departure.
