Coronation Street star Simon Gregson previews what may be in store for his character Steve following his split from wife Tracy.

Coronation Street star Simon Gregson has suggested that his character Steve could have "a full-on midlife crisis" now that he is single again.

In a storyline that has played out over the last few months, Steve's wife Tracy (Kate Ford) embarked upon an affair with one of his heroes, former Weatherfield County striker Tommy Orpington (Matt Milburn).

After the affair was discovered, rather than plead for forgiveness, Tracy made the unusual move of dumping Steve - even though he forgave her and Tommy moved away to take up a new job in Spain.

"I think it would be great if we see Steve having to go down the route of speed dating, online dating, maybe being single for a while," said Gregson, who has been on the cobbles since 1989.

"Steve could have a full-on midlife crisis, maybe we could see him losing weight, changing his appearance, going to the gym. It could be a lot of fun and also a great excuse for me to make some changes in real life with him!"

As for potential new love interests for Steve on the street, he added: "I think anyone will do, at this point in Steve's life he'd be lucky to have anybody! If she's got a pulse and she can make a sandwich I think Steve would be happy."

In episodes airing this week, the story takes a further twist when Tommy writes to Tracy asking her to come join him in Spain - but Steve intercepts the letter and decides to burn it.

"He knows Tommy is going to Spain and this is his chance to get him out of the picture," Gregson explained. "So when he finds the letter, it's like everything has fallen in his lap. He thinks if he gets rid of the letter, he can stick to his plan and put his family back together.

"Yes Tommy's written a love letter to her, but they've had a whole life together, they've known each other since they were kids, surely she's just being a bit daft.

"What he doesn't realise is Tracy has genuine feelings for Tommy so not sure it's going to work out quite this way for poor Steve."

Coronation Street continues this week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
